Logan’s Run for Real?!
Logan’s Run is one of my favorite movies. It’s tasty, 1970’s sci-fi cheese with robots, and lasers and glowing jewels of death. If you haven’t seen the film (and you should, it’s wonderful) the story revolves around Logan, who lives in a huge dome city created to save humanity when the world is nearly destroyed. It’s a happy-go-lucky place until you turn 30 and a little jewel in the palm of your hand starts glowing. This means you have to show up for Carousel, or as I like to think of it, “The Spinning Red Flower of Doom!”. Logan is in charge of gathering up any Runners who try to escape their fate and eventually becomes one himself. There’s one scene that gave me nightmares for years. Logan runs through the offices of a surgeon who uses robotic laser arms to slice open your skin and heal it right back up. Logan escapes, but the doctor is left trapped on his own table. Instead of slice, heal it’s just slice, slice, slice…you get the picture. It was scary stuff, but it’s just a movie right? Right?! Yeah, well think again, because the picture with this post isn’t from the film. It’s the da Vinci Surgicial System and it’s real! If I wake up tomorrow with a red jewel in my hand, I’m so heading for the hills.
