The Cowboy and the Submarine
I saw the movie Dr. Strangelove as a kid and though the point of it was lost on me, I never forgot the scene where Major T.J. “King” Kong rides a nuclear bomb right out of the bomb bay doors. He waves his cowboy hat in the air like he’s riding a bull in a rodeo, whooping and hollering as he plummets to certain doom. Today, I saw this picture of Sir Richard Branson and the first thing I thought of was good old Major Kong. All he’s missing is the hat. Fortunately, this isn’t a bomb, or even some snazzy jet. It’s actually an amazing submarine that he plans to take to the deepest parts of our oceans in a quest to explore what has never been seen and set a few Guinness World Records. My biggest fear is not nuclear annihilation but that he could find Gungans somewhere down in the Mariana Trench. Exploring strange new worlds in the ocean, that’s cool. Now I just have to find a way to sell all my worldly possessions so I can afford the fare if he ever starts taking passengers. Yee-haw!
