Happy Towel, Star Wars, Geek, Glorious 25th of May Day!
I love Geek holidays They don’t force you to hang out with family and endure the same old stories you’ve heard a hundred times, many of which involve the adorable and embarrassing things you did when you were a kid. You aren’t required to cook a meal of epic proportions that will leave you with enough leftovers for a month. There are no presents to buy, decorations to hang, or cards to send. Geek holidays are not such pressure cookers of adult responsibility. They’re pure and simple fun. Take today, May 25th, which has the distinction of being not one, not two, but as many as four Geek holidays rolled into one. Confusing? Not at all. But just in case you aren’t “in the know” about the wonder of today, let me break it all down for you.
If your are a fan of Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy trilogy, then you’ll be commemorating Towel Day by walking around with a towel. At all times. Yes, this means that you really should be taking it with you to work and carrying it into that presentation this afternoon. No, it’s not silly. It’s perfectly reasonable. Don’t panic! It will come in handy to mop the sweat from your brow or, just in case you make a real mess of things, it will let you cover you head in shame as you slink from the conference room.
Those of you with Jedi (or Sith) tendencies will be celebrating Star Wars Day and the release date of the original movie on May 25th 1977. You don’t have to actually wear or do anything, but if you wore your hair in traditional Leia Cinnabuns and maybe carried your genuine replica lightsaber complete with lights and sounds, that would be an apt tribute. This has also led to today being Geek Pride Day, to encompass all things Geek, not just Star Wars. I thik the addition of some pointy Vulcan ears ought to pull your look together nicely.
And last, but not least, it is the Glorious 25th of May which celebrates Sir Terry Pratchett, author of the Discworld series of fantasy novels. In order properly commemorate this celebration one needs to wear lilacs. A nice sprig in your lapel is perfect. You might also consider having a hard-boiled egg for a snack just to make sure you cover all your bases.
There you have it. You are now fully informed about May 25th, perhaps the most complicated of Geek holidays, but still not as tricky as managing dinner with the family. Now, grab your towel, hang your lightsaber from your belt, stick on those Vulcan ears and fluff those lilacs. Happy Towel, Star Wars, Geek, Glorious 25th of May Day!
