I’ll Be Broke By The Time The Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Episode Airs
It’s the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who this year, and for Whovians this means months of speculation about what exactly we’ll see in the anniversary special. It also means months of new Doctor Who merchandise and with each passing week I find my chances of being broke by the time the episode airs more and more certain.
There is nothing, absolutely nothing, that can be Doctor Who-ified and not make me want to open my wallet. It’s not even technically all related to the 50th, but the sheer volume of new products is stunning. Even the TARDIS, bigger on the inside, smaller on the outside, could not possibly contain it all.
There are at least a dozen shirts that I want to buy. That’s just today’s lot. If I were to make a list of all the shirts that have caught my eye, then I’d need to buy a separate armoire just to hold them all. It’d have to be like the one in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and open up into a whole new world. One made of shelves that could hold the inevitable overflow.
Next, there are posters and prints. This one is technically a perpetual calendar, but that doesn’t even matter. Just look at it! There are all the Doctors along with a few villains and a bit of Gallifreyan and the whole thing is set on a backdrop of the night sky from November 23rd, 1963. Yes, the day the series started. How can you not want this hanging framed on your wall?
I already have a TARDIS cozy for my travel mug, and an actual TARDIS shaped mug, but now I want this one, too. It changes from having our favorite time travel machine sitting on a street to spinning wildly through space when you fill your cup with a hot drink. It’s on my list.
I also may have to move to the United Kingdom so I can buy official Doctor Who postage stamps. Sure, I could just buy some and keep them to myself over here in the US, but I want to be able to use them on all my mail. There will be a mint-in-package set and then the rest I will use, likely sending more letters than I have in years.
