Harrison Ford is Back For “Star Wars” And That’s All I Care About
The official Star Wars casting announcement came out yesterday, confirming what we all pretty much have known for weeks. Original cast members Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, and Harrison Ford are all coming back, but it’s really that last one that has me buying in hook, line, and sinker.
Over the years, Ford has waxed not so poetic about Han Solo. It isn’t a character he talks about fondly and it seemed like he’d sooner be thrown in a pit of snakes than strap on a blaster again, so he was the one I was worried wouldn’t show up for the party.
You could debate about which character most needed to come back, about who was the most logical to appear in the story after Return of the Jedi, but it’d be hard to argue that there was another character people wanted to see again more than Solo. Just take a look at the amount of Han Solo cosplay at the average con and you have your confirmation of his popularity.
I’m a big Star Wars fan, so this new movie is important to me in a way that makes non-fans think I’m a little crazy. It’s just a movie, right? Wrong. It’s a giant slice of the pie that is my childhood and that pie got tossed in my face over the course of the last three films. They had their high points, but their low points were so very, very, low. These new movies are a chance at redemption.
Without Harrison Ford joining the rest of the original cast, there was no chance that redemption would be true.
I could have lived without Leia, though I loved her enough that I dressed up as the Princess for Halloween once, complete with yarn cinnabuns. I could have lived without Luke, though I had a crush on that Jedi Knight that has never completely faded, But Han, no, I needed Han Solo in this film.
It wouldn’t be my Star Wars without a wise-cracking, blaster-toting, piece of junk-piloting, Wookiee-translating scoundrel. Han Solo is coming back to the big screen. I can forgive all sorts of transgressions, even throwing out the Expanded Universe, so long as they give us Solo.
