5 Nerdy Family Weekend Getaways to Try This Summer

Weekend Getaway

Vacations that last for a week are the kinds of things that need lots of planning. You don’t up and head out for that long on the spur of the moment, but you absolutely can do that for a weekend. It’s the perfect way to recharge in between those big vacations and it doesn’t require tons of planning. Here are five nerdy weekend getaways that families will love.

1) Amusement Parks

There are amusement parks large and small that let parents act like goofy kids for a day. Our favorite local park is Canobie Lake Park in Salem, New Hampshire and it’s a great way to spend time with the family. Relax the pace by booking a hotel for the night so you can come back for a second day and enjoy yourself instead of rushing from ride to ride. It’s a lot more fun when you can take time to smell the roses, and popcorn, and caramel apples. This also means more opportunities to act like a goofball and embarrass your kids.

Camping Mystic, CT

2) Camping

We love to camp and rarely plan these weekends more than a few days before we pack up the car. This means we know the weather and can pick a tent or a cabin if things look questionable. Parents get to practice their fire-building skills and the lack of internet means you can entertain yourselves the old-fashioned way with games. Our car is generally a 50/50 split between camping supplies and board games. Nothing like an all-weekend gamefest to recharge the nerd batteries.

3) Get Your History On

Weekend getaways can be fun and educational, but don’t tell your kids about that last part. We live close to Boston, Massachusetts and Portsmouth, New Hampshire which both have lots of history and plenty to do no matter your interests. It’s great for history nerds and there’s a decent chance you’ll be able to dress your kid like a pilgrim or a sailor or something equally ridiculous. Cosplay. Gotta start ’em young.

GenCon2

4) Conventions

Last week was the annual nerdapalooza that is San Diego Comic-Con and GenCon is in just a few weeks. They’re both huge monsters and have to be booked months in advance, but they’re not the only cons in town. There are smaller local conventions all across the country that are the perfect way to release your inner nerd for the weekend. Hotels at smaller cons are affordable and plentiful, and staying overnight means you can enjoy all the late-night nerd festivities. Small cons are also much easier with little kids.

5) Museums

There are big museums in big cities, but even smaller towns have their museums. Don’t believe me? There’s something called the Space Acorn in Kecksburg, PA and this oddball attraction has a little museum/gift shop. These kinds of places are everywhere. The kids, and you, will learn a little something and it’s fun to wander through a museum and check out all the exhibits. Take time to explore the city around the museum, too. If there’s a reason to have a museum, then there’s likely a town filled with related attractions designed to engage the whole family.
