The Bounty Hunter Mayhem of Killjoys

Killjoys

It seems like there are suddenly quite a few choices if you’re looking to get your fix of science fiction programming on television. This is something that makes me very happy as there wasn’t a heck of a lot out there worth watching not too long ago. One new show that I’m loving to bits is Killjoys which is currently airing its first season on SyFy.

We are watching Defiance and are caught up so there are no new episodes at the moment. I hate it when I have to wait for new episodes to air so I was happy to find another great series that already had a few episodes in the hopper.

Dutch

Killjoys is part Firefly, with a dash of Farscape, and a little bit of Blade Runner thrown in for good measure. It sounds crazy because it is, and in a very good way.

The story centers around a team of killjoys that are futuristic bounty hunters for hire in a distant galaxy. It’s a world where things aren’t bright and shiny, at least not for everyone. There is great wealth in the hands of the powerful and great suffering for those who are less fortunate. There’s a grittiness to the future that’s reminiscent of Blade Runner.

John

Killjoys aren’t rogues like Boba Fett, but licensed professionals with credentials and a fair amount of clout. They fly around the galaxy collecting their bounties and trying not to get killed in the process. The writing is very Whedonesque with lots of quips that will have you laughing out loud and wanting to watch Firefly again.

The crew of the ship includes kick-ass Dutch who is the leader. She’s the sexy one no one thinks is a threat until she knocks you out cold. She’s joined by John and his brother D’avin, the later of whom has a mysterious military past that no one yet understands.

D'Avin

Then there’s the ship, Lucy, who is all attitude. She’s supposed to be just a machine, but she talks to the crew very much like another member of their team and she may have a crush on John. She reminds me of Farscape‘s Moira.

The stories and characters are wonderful with each episode revealing a little more about who everyone is and their secrets. I won’t spoil it, so you’ll just have to watch to find out more. Oh, and the soundtrack is worth mentioning because it gives Guardians of the Galaxy a run for its money.

If you’re looking for some action-packed sci-fi that is lighthearted fun with a layer of complexity beneath it all, then add Killjoys to your watch list.
