Why Our Drive Home From GenCon Always Involves Ice Cream
I love road trips. There’s nothing quite so fun as piling the family into the car and heading for parts unknown. I know, some parents hate the thought of spending hours in the car with their kids, but we love it. Part of the reason we love it so much is that we stop at random places along the way. Sometimes they turn out to be so good, we make them regular pit stops. Young’s Jersey Dairy in Yellow Springs, Ohio is one of the places we stop every year coming home from GenCon.
There comes a time when you just need to get out of the car, have something to eat, and stretch your legs. You need a few breaks to make a road trip fun. Young’s Jersey Dairy is at the perfect stopping point for us on the way back from GenCon to New Hampshire. Also, they have amazing ice cream and cheese curds.
You’ve probably had ice cream before and this is easily some of the best. It’s wonderfully fresh and they have flavors that change throughout the season. I’m always sad that we’re never in the area during Fall because pumpkin and apple flavors are so tasty. I’d love to see what they’ve got in September! There are also freshly made waffle cones and waffle bowls with a sweet aroma that is impossible to ignore.
Depending on where you live, cheese curds may be completely foreign and sound gross, but you have to trust me on this one. They’re delicious. Fried mozzarella sticks are a win with everyone, so just think of this as a twist on that popular appetizer. You should get them fried so they make your fingers all greasy and nibble them alongside your ice cream. It’s the whole salty and sweet thing that makes the experience delightful. You can also get them chilled with various seasonings, but the fried ones all gooey and hot are the absolute best. If you must try the chilled variety, then take them with you on the road to eat along the way.
They make their own ice cream at Young’s Jersey Dairy with a 15% butterfat mix to make it super rich and creamy. It is not in any way low calorie, but it’s definitely worth the splurge. Flavors include the old standards like vanilla and chocolate or more unique choices like sea salt caramel, lemon custard, and peaches & cream. You will have a hard time deciding, so feel free to mix and match your scoops so you can try as many flavors as possible.
There’s also a restaurant, The Golden Jersey Inn, that is attached right to the ice cream shop. It serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner in what is essentially a remodeled barn with a wood beam ceiling and plank siding. This is the perfect place to eat your ice cream and enjoy your fried cheese curds. The food overall isn’t fancy, but it’s darn tasty. There are burgers, fries, chicken, and all the wholesome stuff you’d expect to eat, in a barn. Arrive hungry and you’ll leave full.
If you’re planning to spend a little more time at Young’s Jersey Dairy and have little ones, then wander outside where there is a small petting zoo with lots of goats. You can feed the goats as they clamor to get ahead of each other along the fence. Don’t worry. There are washing stations nearby so you can clean off your hands and be germ-free in no time.
There are also real tractors for the kids to crawl all over. They don’t work of course, but that makes them no less fun for pretending you’re plowing a field and getting ready for the harvest. Yes, grown-ups can crawl up there for a picture, too. There’s even a mini golf course to burn off some energy before getting back in the car.
They have events nearly every weekend from Easter egg hunts to corn mazes to haunted hayrides. As a local attraction, this is a place you could easily visit again and again throughout the year to experience all they have to offer on their farm. Although we’ve never spent more than an hour or two, this is definitely the kind of place where you could spend an entire day with the kids. Mine were none to happy about getting back in the car and would have enjoyed even more time to explore and possible a few more scoops of ice cream.
If you’re making the trip from the East to GenCon or even just passing through, plan a stop at Young’s Jersey Dairy and get your fill of their delicious treats.
