Sir Roger Moore Dies, Who Was Your James Bond?

Sir Roger Moore, who played James Bond in seven movies, passed away at age 89 after a battle with cancer. His Bond films included Moonraker, Live and Let Die, and Octupussy. Was he the best James Bond? That’s long been a source of argument among fans, but for those like me whose first Bond film featured Roger Moore, he was our 007.

Seven actors have taken on the role of James Bond since Dr. No started the movie franchise back in 1962 with Sean Connery. The full roster of Bonds includes David Niven, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig. Each brought a different twist to the role and each has his share of fans and detractors.

Since the first Bond movies I watched featured Roger Moore, he is my James Bond. I’m a big fan of Daniel Craig, Pierce Brosnan, and Sean Connery, but my introduction to the spy came through Moore so he will always be the ultimate James Bond.

Every Bond movie is a little absurd and that’s what makes them so much fun to watch. Not being a real spy, I have no idea how close any of it is to reality, but I’m going to go out on a limb and guess not very. The best action movies always involve a healthy dose of the impossible and Bond movies always deliver.

Perhaps there’s a spy out there spending his days saving the world, riding in underwater cars, and occasionally finding himself in outer space all before dinner. And perhaps that same spy will arrive at dinner impeccably dressed to meet his elegant date who he will easily seduce. Unless you’re a spy, how do you know?

What I do know is that Roger Moore was my introduction to James Bond. He was my first 007 and he will always be my favorite 007.
